"It is the sole object of my research, the source of my most fundamental discoveries, of my joys, of the fascination that drove me to my most pioneering work. How different it seems, now that I am contemplating my own death. Now memory is nothing more than a record of my past and that past is full of sorrow, regret and repentance."
— Judd regarding memory

Judd Fitzgerald (1936-2001) is a character in Another Code: R - A Journey into Lost Memories. He was the founder of J.C. Valley company and E.C.Labs. He contributed greatly to the academic research of memories.

Background[]

Judd was raised in the South, and was a man of enormous presence. He was hailed as a genius in the scientific community when he published his thesis in his late twenties. His fame and charisma drew people to him.

Judd Ryan

Judd unable to console Ryan after his mother's death.

Around 1973, Judd became the father of Ryan Gray. Ryan closed himself off after his mother's death in an accident where she protected Ryan, By feeding him a special formula, Judd erased Ryan's childhood memories and was misled to believe Judd was his mentor, not father. It is suggested that Judd wanted him to forget the painful memory of his mother's death and help him move on, and that if Ryan was used as a test subject, then such research could help other people with trauma. Judd gave Ryan to someone else he felt would be capable of raising Ryan, then distanced himself from Ryan.

In 1984, he took up the position of the director of M.J. Labs, a company set up for him. It was an advanced research facility with government VIPs on the board of directors, which recruited only the brightest American graduates as researchers. Judd was an inspiration to these graduates and helped them unlock their own potential, exceeding their own limits. However, if he did not get along with someone, he would become coldly indifferent to them.

In 1993, M.J. Labs had been working on the EC Project, designed to create artificial memories, but the project was beset by problems, having gone on far too long with little results and too much budget. The board of directors decided to cancel the project, but Judd refused to shut down the lab and was fired.

Afterwards, he used his entire fortune, including funding from private companies interested in memory research, to set up JC Valley on the shore of Lake Juliet and developed Another 0. He acknowledged Sayoko Robbins as his only successor, but when she refused and quit her job to focus on being a mother, he took her memories of the six years she spent developing Another. His paternal love for her also turned into hatred. He would later feel immense remorse, especially when Sayoko died. It seems he knew Bill Edward took her life as Judd's letter mentions one of his former employees took her life, but Judd apparently kept quiet about it.

He died in an accident in 2001; it is claimed his car brakes gave out while driving and he drove off a cliff. However, Greg Davis believes it may not be an accident and began to research Judd's mysterious death. Rex Alfred became the company's new director.

In 2007, three days before the events of the game, his villa at Lake Juliet was mysteriously burned down.

Trivia[]

  • He once commissioned a painting known as the Twin Lions, which depicts two lions standing on top of the world. It's mean to represent Judd's two qualities: knowledge and the drive for research. He enjoyed the motif so much that it was his door knocker for his villa.
